The Toronto Maple Leafs are one step closer to finalizing their roster for the upcoming season with the addition of Max Pacioretty, although salary cap complications remain a hurdle.
After weeks of speculation, the Leafs and Pacioretty have come to terms, with both sides confident that the deal will be finalized soon. Rumors had been circulating about Pacioretty joining the Leafs, and now it appears to be nearly official. However, as noted by Frank Seravalli, the Leafs may need to make some moves to accommodate Pacioretty under the salary cap.
There had been speculation that the Leafs might offer Max Pacioretty a professional tryout (PTO), but according to NHL insider Darren Dreger, they opted for a standard contract instead.
Although Pacioretty, now 35, has struggled with injuries in recent seasons-appearing in just 52 games over the past two years, including dealing with a torn Achilles-he bounced back last year with four goals and 23 points in 47 games for Washington. His leadership and scoring ability could boost Toronto's bottom six lineup.
While Pacioretty's signing is a positive step for Toronto, some players, like Ryan Reaves, David Kampf, or Calle Jarnkrok, could be dealt to make space under the salary cap. With his leadership and ability to contribute offensively, a healthy Pacioretty might just be the missing piece Toronto needs as they aim for the Stanley Cup.
