After a challenging playoff run with the Maple Leafs a few months ago, Mitch Marner is now in the final year of his contract. Since July 1st, he has been eligible to sign an extension, but three weeks have passed with no progress.
Fans are eagerly awaiting news about the Leafs' 4th overall pick from 2015, and concerns are being voiced online, including by former NHL players like Mike Rupp.
Rupp, who played 609 NHL games between 2002 and 2014 for teams including the New Jersey Devils, Phoenix Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, and Minnesota Wild, recently shared his views on the NHL Network.
In a recent appearance on the NHL Network, Rupp discussed Mitch Marner's contract situation and his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Rupp indicated that Marner will receive a significant raise, but it's uncertain whether this will be with the Leafs or another team.
In his own words:
The only way Mitch Marner remains a Toronto Maple Leaf is if he agrees to a pay cut.
With William Nylander and Auston Matthews having secured substantial extensions, Marner is also deserving of a new deal.
Speculation and rumors will persist until Brad Treliving makes a decision.
Stay tuned for further updates.
