Over the weekend, the Vancouver Canucks bolstered their roster by signing Daniel Sprong to enhance their forward lineup. Although Patrik Allvin is likely finished making moves for the forwards, there could still be potential additions on the blue line.
In a recent appearance on Halford and Brough, insider Rick Dhaliwal connected the Canucks to free-agent defenseman Tyson Barrie as a budget-friendly, puck-moving option. Dhaliwal did not clarify whether this would be a guaranteed contract for the 2024-25 season or a professional tryout (PTO).
At 32, Tyson Barrie became an unrestricted free agent on July 1st after the Nashville Predators chose to move on from him. The veteran defenseman endured a challenging season, appearing in only 41 games due to injuries and several healthy scratches, including during the trade deadline when many anticipated a move.
In those 41 games, the Victoria, British Columbia native recorded 15 points (one goal, 14 assists), 16 penalty minutes, and a minus-ten rating. He also contributed one assist in Nashville's first-round playoff series against the Canucks.
Signing Barrie to a one-year deal with a low cap hit could be a savvy move for the Canucks. While he would likely be positioned on the third pairing, his offensive prowess from the blue lineboasting 505 points in 809 career gamescould make him a valuable asset for Rick Tocchet's second power-play unit.
