A new clip from the Steve Dangle Podcast featuring NHL insider Chris Johnston has surfaced this evening, revealing that the San Jose Sharks were on the verge of signing John Tavares.

Since John Tavares signed as a free agent, he and the Toronto Maple Leafs have enjoyed a fruitful partnership, culminating in his captaincy. Yet, a recent report shows this was almost not the case.

Insider reveals massive offer made to John Tavares by the San Jose Sharks

During his appearance on the Steve Dangle Podcast, insider Chris Johnston disclosed that the San Jose Sharks had extended a lucrative contract offer to John Tavares when he was a free agent.
Chris Johnston says Sharks offered John Tavares 7-yrs, $13M AAV when he was a UFA (SDP)
When the San Jose Sharks made their contract offer, the team was quite different. Rather than being bottom feeders in the NHL, they were perennial playoff contenders, even reaching the Conference Finals the year after missing out on John Tavares.
Instead of heading west to join the Sharks, Tavares chose to return home, signing a 7-year deal with an $11 million AAVa significant discount compared to the reported offer from the San Jose Sharks.
I'm thrilled to be starting a new chapter of my career and life in Toronto with the @MapleLeafs. I feel very fortunate to come join a team with a great young core and play where I grew up learning and loving the game. I can't wait to get started!
Since then, John Tavares has become the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs and one of the team's most beloved players. However, in terms of team success, Tavares and the Maple Leafs have not achieved the level of success they had hoped for.
As he enters the final year of his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, John Tavares will once again strive to bring the elusive Stanley Cup home to the city of Toronto.
