The Toronto Maple Leafs are actively shopping Timothy Liljegren in an attempt to free up some cap space and the Vegas Golden Knights are very interested.
Should this deal between the Leafs and Golden Knights go through, it would see Toronto picking up a 2025 second-round pick as well as a 2026 third-round pick in exchange for Timothy Liljegren.
By offloading Timothy Liljegren's salary, the Leafs would gain $3 million in cap space which they can then use to add Jani Hakanpaa and his $1.5 million salary into their lineup once that situation gets sorted out.
This would be a great move for the Leafs as Timothy Liljegren struggled a little last season to remain consistent, showing promise some games while being very careless other nights. Now that the Leafs have signed free agents Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson this summer, it's going to be even harder for Liljegren to get a good amount of minutes on the team next season.
The Golden Knights would absolutely love having a guy like Timothy Liljegren in their lineup. He is only 25 years old and has a lot of room for growth and could legitimately develop into a top-four defenseman. The team wouldn't even have to give up a first-round pick for his services. On top of all that, Liljegren has shown he loves to party, and would no doubt fit right into that Vegas nightlife.
Fans need to remember that this trade is speculative and aligns perfectly with the needs of both the Leafs and Vegas, so it is possible that the GM's of both teams have already started looking into this.
Timothy Liljegren finished last season with three goals and 20 assists in 55 games for the Maple Leafs.
