The Toronto Maple Leafs and GM Brad Treliving have done an impressive job managing the salary cap this season. Still, now they'll face a test with forward Calle Järnkrok's $2.1 million cap hit looming when he returns from his LTIR stint following his rehab from Hernia surgery.
A trade between the two teams could address needs on both sides, with the 11-6-2 Leafs, who are 7-2-1 in their last ten and flying high, aiming to offload salary and the 7-10-3 Penguins seeking to inject new energy into their lineup. Toronto has specific needs, particularly a reliable third-line center or a depth-scoring winger.
Pittsburgh has players who could fit those roles, like Kevin Hayes, who brings experience and physicality, or Drew O'Connor, a younger forward with scoring potential.
Meanwhile, Dubas might look to bring in players he's familiar with from his time in Toronto. Calle Järnkrok could complement Sidney Crosby as a versatile forward with a scoring touch, and has at least two more years of control left on his contract, just like Crosby.
Nick Robertson is another intriguing option, as the young forward could thrive in a more significant role with more ice time, something Pittsburgh might be able to offer.
A deal between these two teams seems like a natural fit. Toronto needs to clear cap space to stay compliant, and Pittsburgh needs reinforcements to avoid falling out of playoff contention.
Both GMs have a history of creativity in navigating cap challenges, making trade possible and beneficial for both sides. It might just be the solution both teams are searching for.
