Many Canadian kids dream of playing for their hometown NHL team and representing their country on the biggest stages. For Daniel Winnik, a Toronto native, that dream became a reality when he joined the NHL in 2007, before joining his home town Maple Leafs in the year 2014.
Following an impressive career in the NHL and abroad, the 39-year-old has taken to social media to announce his retirement.
In the last six years of his career, Winnik played in Switzerland, but he will be most remembered for his time in the NHL. He played 789 games, scoring 82 goals and totaling 251 points during that span. While not considered among the all-time greats, Winnik had a highly respectable professional career. His career highlight was representing Canada in the 2022 Olympic Games when the NHL chose not to participate.
The future for Winnik is uncertain, but given his extensive hockey knowledge and experience, the game would undoubtedly benefit if he continued to be involved post-retirement.
