After sealing the deal with the Dallas Stars, the Toronto Maple Leafs discovered a hidden loophole in Chris Tanev's new contract.

The Toronto Maple Leafs made a significant impact during this year's NHL draft, acquiring a total of 8 prospects over 7 rounds. Among them, the standout was Ben Danford, selected 31st overall and a lifelong fan of the team. Danford captured attention and went viral for his memorable moment of snubbing NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
"🚨 Maple Leafs draft pick Ben Danford with the Gary Bettman handshake snub

He's gonna fit in just fine! 😎"
However, perhaps the most crucial moment for Toronto in the draft occurred when they were on the clock for the final pick at 225, They secured a deal with the Dallas Stars to obtain rights to Chris Tanev in exchange for Max Ellis and a 7th-round pick in 2026.
"🚨 TRADE ALERT 🚨

We have traded the rights to Chris Tanev to @MapleLeafs for Max Ellis and a 2026 #NHLDraft 7th Round Selection.

Welcome to #TexasHockey, Max!"
Despite appearing straightforward for the Stars, it appears there's a loophole that could greatly benefit Toronto. The Maple Leafs have revealed that due to Tanev's age, the team wouldn't face a cap penalty if he retires before his contract expires. This provides them flexibility to adjust the contract length and average annual value (AAV) without affecting total compensation.
"Because Tanev isn't 35 yet on July 1, if he retires during his contract the Leafs would not incur a cap penalty. Even more incentive to increase the term to lower the AAV.

(3.5 x 6 is same money as 5.25 x 4, for example)"
Under these conditions, the Toronto Maple Leafs could secure a reliable defensive player for the remaining years of his NHL career. With Chris Tanev's skills and a strong forward lineup, the team may have a real shot at bringing the Stanley Cup back north.
