The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to reshape their roster for the upcoming season, with their latest move being the signing of veteran forward Max Pacioretty to a Player Tryout (PTO) contract.

Many fans are questioning whether this is just a salary cap maneuver, or if Pacioretty has a real chance of making the team. Amidst these concerns, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has provided further clarification on Pacioretty's chances of securing a spot.

Brad Treliving clarifies Max Pacioretty's status with the Toronto Maple Leafs

During an interview, Brad Treliving was asked about where Max Pacioretty fits into the Leafs' plans. In his response, he remained cautious in his wording, emphasizing that while he expects Pacioretty to be part of the team, nothing is guaranteed.
My expectation is he's going to be with us, but everyone has to earn their spot here.
-Treliving on Max Pacioretty

Treliving's statement reflects the uncertainty surrounding Pacioretty's future with the team. As the NHL preseason looms, the Maple Leafs still need to address their salary cap situation to accommodate Pacioretty. Given his recent injury history and role as a depth forward during his time with the Washington Capitals, where he played 47 games and recorded 23 points last season, Pacioretty's ability to remain healthy will be a key factor in his success.
Max Pacioretty has not completed a 70-game season since 2019-20. However, at his best, he was a 65-plus point power forward and captain of the Montreal Canadiens. If he can stay healthy and find a way to contribute 30-40 points from the bottom six, Pacioretty could be a valuable addition to the Leafs' lineup. His veteran leadership and potential offensive contributions might turn this PTO into a low-risk, high-reward move for Toronto.
If Pacioretty cannot remain healthy or produce at the level required, this signing could join the list of veteran experiments that have not panned out for the Maple Leafs in recent years. For now, the fans and the front office will be watching closely to see how Pacioretty performs in the coming weeks.
