The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a noteworthy move by re-signing defenseman Nicolas Mattinen, who stands at an imposing 6-foot-5.

After nearly a decade since his initial draft, Mattinen is eager to secure a spot with the team for the upcoming NHL season.

Leafs bring back Mattinen after long hiatus

The Leafs signed Nicolas Mattinen in April, marking a significant return for the defenseman who was originally drafted by Toronto eight years ago. At 225 pounds, Mattinen brings a substantial physical presence to the defense. His recent performances in the AHL, U-Sports, and the DEL have been impressive, with two stellar seasons that saw him accumulate 88 points in 98 games.
"Internally, I always felt like I could play [in the NHL]. I just kept working on my game and internally believing that 'If you're good enough, they'll find you.' Toronto found me for the second time, eight years later."
With the Leafs currently having a full roster, Mattinen is expected to start the season with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. However, given his impressive recent form and the Leafs' need for a right-handed defenseman of his caliber, he could be one of the first called up in case of injuries or other roster changes.
This strategic move could prove pivotal for the Leafs as they look to bolster their defensive lineup with a player who has shown considerable growth and potential over the past few seasons.
