Now, in a significant shift within the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, Jason Spezza has been promoted to general manager of the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins by Kyle Dubas.
Dubas and Spezza, who previously worked together with the Toronto Maple Leafs, are now set to bring their successful partnership to Pittsburgh. As part of the transition, Spezza will also retain his role as assistant GM with the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins.
Jason Spezza's new role marks a notable step in his post-playing career. After retiring from the NHL in 2022, Spezza took on a role as special assistant to Kyle Dubas with the Maple Leafs. His journey continued with Dubas to Pittsburgh in 2023, where Spezza was initially appointed as an assistant GM. Now, with Dubas's latest promotion, Spezza is stepping up as the general manager of the Penguins' AHL affiliate.
Spezza's NHL career was distinguished by his time with the Ottawa Senators, Dallas Stars, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He reached the 1,000-game milestone and concluded his career with the Maple Leafs, contributing significantly over three seasons with 31 goals and 49 assists in 183 games. The 41-year-old's experience and leadership will now be pivotal in his new AHL role.
During their time with the Maple Leafs, Dubas and Spezza were part of the team's long-awaited playoff success in 2023. Their goal is to replicate that success in Pittsburgh, a franchise that has faced challenges over the past two years, missing the playoffs in both seasons.
The Penguins are hopeful that Spezza's new position will invigorate the organization and contribute to a turnaround.
