The 2024 NHL Draft witnessed the Utah Hockey Club making a significant move, and now their top defenseman, Mikhail Sergachev, has responded to the blockbuster trade.
Following months of anticipation, the Utah Hockey Club has officially become an NHL team, sparking excitement with the young talent they brought from Arizona. This excitement reached new heights at the 2024 NHL Draft when Ryan Smith and the front office went all-in for a playoff run, securing Mikhail Sergachev from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The deal caught everyone off guard, including Sergachev, who has now shared his first thoughts on the trade:
Fortunately, his perspective changed quickly, thanks to forward Clayton Keller, who helped him feel enthusiastic about the future in Utah, which is widely regarded as very promising.
"Talking to my agent, talking to some players, and talking to (Utah forward Clayton) Keller, everybody said great things about Utah and the new franchise," he said. "It's pretty amazing, honestly. The whole setup, the city. I'm very excited. It's a big opportunity for me to prove myself, being a leader. I'm looking forward to it."
With the addition of 26-year-old Mikhail Sergachev entering his prime, along with Sean Durzi and John Marino, this blue line now looks like one of the strongest in the Western Conference. When you add a core led by Clayton Keller, Josh Doan, Logan Cooley, and Dylan Guenther, it's clear why Sergachev and the city of Salt Lake City are so excited.
The trade was a shock to everyone, including those involved. If everything goes well, Utah HC should be a team to watch in the 2024/25 season in a competitive Western Conference.
