Kasperi Kapanen's courageous decision marks a turning point, closing the chapter on his past and embracing a renewed perspective on life.
At 27, Kasperi Kapanen faced legal trouble last off-season when he was arrested for drinking and driving, leading to a subsequent conviction. Now, just a year later, he reflects on what has been undoubtedly the most challenging period of his life.
"I think I told my mother and of course, my girlfriend knew about it. I only told the others when the matter came out in September. It was such a big shame for me."
Kapanen also discussed his apprehension about telling his father, former NHL player Sami Kapanen, about the incident.
"I didn't even dare to tell my father, because I knew he would be really disappointed
Later in the interview, he revealed why he resorted to alcohol.
"At some point, there was more drinking that I didn't do it to celebrate, but because there was so much pressure, annoyance or anxiety during the season," Kapanen shares. "I tried to use alcohol to almost mask those feelings."
As he prepares for the 2024-25 NHL season, Kapanen has rejoined the Blues on a one-year, $1 million contract. The former Pittsburgh Penguin and Maple Leafs player aims to revive his career and secure a regular spot in the NHL for the foreseeable future.
