the Pittsburgh Penguins gear up for their season opener in 30 days, they remain pressed against the cap but may still find value in free agents on a professional tryout (PTO).

With the Penguins boasting a strong top-four defensive lineup, including Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang, they still lack depth in case of injuries or slumps. Head coach Mike Sullivan and his staff are likely keeping a close eye on several free agents who could earn their place during training camp. Here are three unrestricted free agents Pittsburgh may consider adding to fill crucial roster spots.

Gustav Lindstrom could bolster defense depth

Pittsburgh's top defensemen struggled to perform in 2023-24, and with Karlsson, Letang, and Graves aging, plus Pettersson nearing free agency and looking for a standout year, reinforcements are needed. Grzelcyk and Aho likely won't play 70-80 games, leaving an opening for someone like Gustav Lindstrom to step in regularly.
If Lindstrom can maintain his usual ice time of 15 minutes per game, he could be a valuable addition for the Penguins' third pairing, stepping up if needed due to injuries or rotation.

Kailer Yamamoto: a depth forward option

Kailer Yamamoto, a former first-round draft pick, has established himself as a reliable depth forward in the NHL. Although his offensive production was modest last season with Seattle, tallying 16 points in 59 games, he has demonstrated moments of brilliance while playing alongside Connor McDavid in Edmonton.
His knack for avoiding errors and his versatility as a forward could make him an ideal fit for the Penguins, especially in the event of injuries or slumps among their forwards.

James Van Riemsdyk: veteran presence on the power play

Even though the Penguins are already one of the league's oldest teams, bringing in a veteran like James van Riemsdyk could still be a smart move. He posted 38 points in 71 games for the Boston Bruins last season, including 12 on the power play. With Pittsburgh aiming to revamp its power play under David Quinn, van Riemsdyk's experience could be a key asset.
While van Riemsdyk might not be the most high-profile player, his consistent contributions on special teams and veteran leadership could provide the Penguins with crucial support during key moments throughout the season.
With the Penguins looking for every competitive edge, inviting one or more of these free agents to camp could provide the extra boost they need heading into the new season.
