The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed captain Sidney Crosby to a two-year extension through the 2026-27 season, carrying an average annual value of $8.7 million.

The move further solidifies Crosby's future with the team and highlights his ongoing impact on the franchise.
«There are no words to properly describe what Sidney Crosby means to the game of hockey, the city of Pittsburgh, and the Penguins organization,» said Kyle Dubas, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager.

Dubas continued, "Sid is the greatest player of his generation and one of the greatest players in the history of the game. His actions today show why he is one of hockey's greatest winners and leaders."

Crosby's selflessness and dedication to the Penguins have been instrumental in shaping their competitive success. His commitment to the team, both now and into the future, remains a testament to his leadership qualities.
Dubas emphasized,"Sid is making a tremendous personal sacrifice to help the Penguins win, as he has done for his entire career.

Crosby's historic 20-year legacy with the Penguins

Crosby is set to enter his franchise-record 20th season with the Penguins, including 18 as captain. With his extension, he moves closer to Detroit's Steve Yzerman, who holds the record as the longest-tenured captain in NHL history at 19 seasons. Crosby's impact on the Penguins extends beyond his leadership, as he holds numerous franchise records, including games played (1,272), even-strength goals (416), and game-winning goals (90).
In addition, Crosby trails only Hall-of-Famer Mario Lemieux in several other key categories, including goals (592), assists (1,004), and points (1,596). He has been an essential part of the Penguins' three Stanley Cup championships (2009, 2016, 2017).

An illustrious individual career

Crosby's individual achievements are equally remarkable. The 10-time NHL All-Star has won multiple major awards throughout his career, including two Art Ross Trophies, two Hart Memorial Trophies, and three Ted Lindsay Awards. His two Conn Smythe Trophies and the Mark Messier Leadership Award further solidify his standing as one of the greatest players and leaders in NHL history.
Dubas reiterated Crosby's legendary work ethic, stating, "Sid's dedication to his craft is the stuff of legends. His daily commitment to helping the Penguins win surpasses even the highest expectations placed on him."

The new extension ensures that Crosby will remain the face of the Penguins as they continue their efforts to return to Stanley Cup contention.

A legacy cemented in playoff history

Crosby's playoff performances have been just as storied as his regular-season accolades. His 201 playoff points (71 goals, 130 assists) place him among the top playoff performers in NHL history. Crosby became the youngest captain to win the Stanley Cup at age 21 in 2009 and is one of just three players to win back-to-back Conn Smythe Trophies, joining NHL legends Bernie Parent and Mario Lemieux.
Beyond the NHL, Crosby's international career is equally impressive. He is a member of the exclusive Triple Gold Club, having won the Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold, and a World Championship. Crosby also led Canada to victory at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where he scored the «Golden Goal» in overtime to secure gold for Canada against the United States. His international dominance continues as he prepares to represent Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February 2025.
At 37 years old, Sidney Crosby's legacy remains as strong as ever, and his new contract extension guarantees that the Penguins will continue to benefit from his unmatched leadership, skill, and dedication for years to come.
