Following Sidney Crosby's outstanding performance in Pittsburgh's 3-1 victory over Montreal on Saturday, the Penguins captain is about to make more history.

The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 on Saturday night thanks to two goals from Sidney Crosby. Now it seems that Sidney Crosby is on the verge to surpass one of Wayne Gretzky's records, even before Alex Ovechkin breaks the goal record.

With 4:03 left in the first period, Crosby put the Penguins ahead, and with 1:20 left in the second, he made it 2-0 on a power play. He shares 14th place on the NHL's all-time list of game-winning goals with Joe Nieuwendyk and Sergei Fedorov. For the 13th-most even-strength goals in league history, Crosby overtook Luc Robitaille.

At left point, Letang swerved away from Nick Suzuki and flipped a backhand pass to Crosby, who beat Montembeault to the glove side with a wrist shot to give Pittsburgh their second goal. For the third-most goals scored by a forward-defenceman combination in NHL history, Crosby and Letang overtook Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty.

«I'm just glad he's the mustache man again, I guess,» Letang said. «That freaking mustache gets him going."

Crosby has returned to his offensive game with a vengeance after a comparatively slow start to the season in terms of production (at least by his extraordinarily high standards). After 13 games, he now has 14 points (5G-9A). In his last three games, Crosby has scored four goals and collected seven points. Crosby scored two goals in a victory over Anaheim on Thursday, marking the seventh time he has scored multiple goals in consecutive games.

"I think inevitably, he's always such a determined player," Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan said. "When he goes through some of the ebbs and flows of a season, like all players do, he has an uncanny ability to will himself out of it.»

Blake Lizotte added his first goal as a Penguin to complete the score. After recuperating from a concussion he suffered during the Kraft Hockeyville preseason game, he made his debut on Thursday.

«It's just going over the fundamentals,» Crosby said. «The same things we went over for a while here, but just reinforcing them and really breaking it down into small things. All those little details add up to winning hockey and it's nice to get rewarded for it. The more we do it and we get rewarded, I think that's good for us, just to see that and feel that. We'll continue to build but we've definitely done a better job of tightening things up.»

Sidney Crosby is on the verge of reaching yet another significant milestone, which has only been reached by Wayne Gretzky.

Sidney Crosby is 3 goals away from 600.

He'd be the 2nd player ever with at least 600 goals, 1600 points, 3 Stanley Cups, 2 Stanley Cup playoff MVPs.

Wayne Gretzky is the only other player to accomplish that.

Crosby is gonna be the first to do it with consecutive playoff MVPs.

Letang is the 73rd player in NHL history to play in 1,100 regular-season games, the first defenseman for the Penguins, and the sixth active blueliner. Letang finished with a beautiful assist against his home team. A total of 25 shots were stopped by Alex Nedeljkovic who started in net today.

The Penguins will begin a three-game road trip on Monday after taking a day off on Sunday. They will play the Capitals, Hurricanes, and Islanders.
