Maple Leafs Nick Robertson at risk of receiving offer sheet from Penguins

Nick Robertson was drafted in the 2nd round by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019, by none other than current GM of the Penguins Kyle Dubas. He registered 14 goals and 27 points in 56 games with the Leafs last season. Robertson did request a trade out of Toronto this past season because he felt his playing time was very low and he's looking for a bigger role.

The Leafs attempted to qualify Nick Robertson, but he did not accept their offer, so now both sides are waiting around to see what happens next. At the moment, Robertson is a restricted free agent (RFA) which means that he could receive an offer sheet by any team.

Should the Leafs choose not to trade Nick Robertson and he does receive an offer sheet by say, the Penguins, the Leafs would have a big decision to make. Toronto only has $1.275 million left in cap space, and Robertson wants out of the city, so the Leafs likely wouldn't match the offer. The Penguins would have to offload draft picks to Toronto if the offer sheet becomes successful.

The Penguins are missing a key piece in their top-six forward group, so Nick Robertson would fit in really nicely. He's been looking for more playing time, so he would definitely get it in that role in Pittsburgh.

Nick Robertson could potentially be a top-six forward with the Penguins for a cap hit of only $2.25 million, and there's no doubt he would improve on his numbers from last season, likely reaching the 50-point mark. An offer sheet by the Penguins for Robertson makes so much sense, and after what we just saw the Blues do, there's no doubt Kyle Dubas is strongly considering this.
