Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill revealed that the team has officially signed goaltender Magnus Hellberg.

Hellberg, who previously played with the Penguins, is expected to join the Texas Stars, the Stars' AHL affiliate.

Hellberg's career journey continues in Dallas

Magnus Hellberg's journey in professional hockey continues as he signs with the Dallas Stars. The 33-year-old goalie, originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2011, will bring his experience to Dallas after a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Hellberg's career has spanned multiple teams, including the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, and the Penguins.
In his recent tenure with the Penguins during the 2023-24 season, Hellberg appeared in three NHL games, earning a perfect 1-0-0 record with a notable .922 save percentage. Despite his impressive performance, he mostly played in the minors, with 19 games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins where he had a 9-8-2 record along with a 2.92 GAA and .905 SV%.
Hellberg's AHL career has been relatively successful, with 218 games played, achieving a 100-83-17 record. His AHL stats include 15 shutouts, a .913 save percentage, and a 2.52 GAA. However, his playoff performance in the AHL has been less stellar, holding a 1-4 record but with impressive stats of a 1.97 GAA and .931 SV%.
In his NHL career, Hellberg has participated in 26 games, with an 8-8-1 record, a .250 GAA, and a .890 save percentage. His NHL experience complements his significant AHL playtime, showcasing a solid performance in North American hockey.

International experience and future prospects

Hellberg also boasts international experience, having represented Sweden at the 2022 Winter Olympics when he wasn't under an NHL contract. His career has included a stint in the KHL with SKA St. Petersburg and HK Sochi from 2017 to 2021.
As Hellberg joins the Dallas Stars, the move signifies another chapter in his diverse hockey career. His ability to transition between the NHL and AHL, coupled with his international play, adds depth to his role with the Stars and their AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars.
