At the age of 30, former Stanley Cup champion Matt Murray will be an unrestricted free agent. Murry has recovered from hip surgery last November that had him out the rest of the regular season for the Maple Leafs.
Murray was drafted to the Penguins in 2012 and was to backup to Tristian Jarry in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton who was drafted the year after. But Murray shined in the AHL, jumping over Tristian Jarry to play backup to Marc-Andre Fleury.
He made his NHL debut in the 2015-16 season, while Fleury was dealing with injuries and Sullivan was liking Murray's play, he because part of the goalie tandem to two Stanley Cups. Confidence was so high that Fleury went unprotected and was drafted by the expansion Golden Knights.
Murray did not play up to standard long, and was traded to Ottawa for Jonathan Gruden, cap space and draft capital.
Once he hits free agency this July 1st, what better place to help Murray get back into goaltender form then with his old club. Goalie coach Andy Chiodo has been credited with helping many goalies get back into their mental game.
With the Penguins only having two goaltenders in the system, Jarry is the only one with NHL experience. Why not take a chance on a former Champion. Murray is not in a position to get himself a high paying gig somewhere, so a two-way bargain deal would work perfectly for the Penguins and give Murray a much-needed shot to shine once more.
If it works, the tandem of Jarry and Murray can help the Penguins between the pipes. If it does not, the Penguins mearly give up a AHL spot to someone who has been in the organization and could use a second chance.
