The unexpected death of former Senators defenseman Dimitri Filimonov at the age of 52 has been confirmed by reports from Russia.

Filimonov was drafted 49th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1991 NHL Draft. He was later traded to the Senators in exchange for a 4th-round pick in the 1993 Draft, which became Ruslan Batyrshin, who played two NHL games with the LA Kings.
Mar 14/93 (31 yrs today), Ottawa Senators acquired defenceman Dmitri Filimonov from the Winnipeg Jets for the Senators' fourth-round pick in 1993 (Ruslan Batyrshin).
After his stint in North America, Filimonov enjoyed a successful career in Russia, playing over 400 games across 10 seasons.

Filimonov played 30 games with the Senators during the 1993-94 season, recording one goal and five points, while also earning 18 penalty minutes and posting a -10 rating. He spent subsequent seasons in the AHL before returning to Russia.
Interestingly, one of his four career assists was recorded while shorthanded. Though his North American career was brief, he will be remembered fondly. Rest in peace, Dimitri.
