Throughout 2024-2025, the New York Rangers have outperformed the majority of NHL teams, and now they have made a surprise move in Matt Rempe.

In a surprising announcement, the New York Rangers have assigned Matt Rempe to the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL.
Matt Rempe of the New York Rangers was the NHL's most sensational player last season. The tall, youthful forward took on everyone, including some of the league's most seasoned enforcers. He hasn't played as much for the New York Rangers in 2024-2025, though, and the team demoted him to the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack in an attempt to give him more ice time.
Rempe has yet to score in two games this season, and since the Rangers are winning without the 6-foot-7 enforcer's physical presence, this is probably the best move the team can make.
Without a doubt, Rempe could be called up and return to the lineup in games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens, among others. If he can enhance his game and make it more well-rounded in the AHL, he will have a much better chance of becoming a regular player. But for the time being, Rempe simply cannot fit into a loaded Rangers team, and since his fighting skills are becoming less and less valuable in the NHL these days, he is a luxury that is simply unnecessary.
"It seems like a dream. They're the best fans in the world. You want to go to battle for them every single time," said Rempe, speaking at the NHLPA rookie showcase "It's a surreal experience. You feel like you're almost floating."

Last season, the 6-foot-9 forward was a sensation, racking up 71 penalty minutes in 17 games during the regular season thanks to a string of fierce altercations. Even when he wasn't skating, Rangers supporters would chant his name.
Rempe recorded one goal and one assist in his 17 games during the regular season last year. In 11 playoff games for New York, he also scored one goal. Rempe only appeared in more than eight minutes three times during those games.
Keep an eye out for a return to the NHL later in the season for a hopefully much improved Rempe. If handled properly, this could transform him from a solid, fighting forward into a true force on the fourth line. Rempe's positive attitude will drive him to try his hardest and improve his overall game.
