Former Pittsburgh Penguin officially signs with the New York Rangers

New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced today that the team has reached an agreement with defenseman Chad Ruhwedel on a one-year contract.

Ruhwedel, 34, contributed one goal and three assists, totaling four points in 52 games during the 2023-24 season split between the Rangers (five games) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (47 games). He joined the Blueshirts following a trade with Pittsburgh on March 8, 2024. Standing at 5-11 and weighing 191 pounds, the San Diego, California native also delivered 90 hits and blocked 44 shots over the course of the season.

In his NHL career spanning 364 games, Ruhwedel has suited up for the Rangers, Penguins, and Buffalo Sabres, amassing 13 goals and 36 assists for a total of 49 points. His standout season came in 2021-22, where he achieved personal bests in goals (4), assists (9), points (13), hits (149), and blocked shots (86).
Chad Ruhwedel has signed with the New York Rangers to a one-year, two-way deal. That's very good value for the Rangers. Ruhwedel is a good depth defensive defenseman.
A member of the 2017 Stanley Cup-winning team, Ruhwedel has participated in 25 playoff games, including a career-high 12 appearances during the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Undrafted in 2013, Ruhwedel began his professional journey as a free agent signing with the Sabres following his collegiate career at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, where he served as an alternate captain in his final season.
