Jordan Greenway, a physically strong forward for the Sabres, struck Reilly head on. Although the hit was clean, Reilly did not take it well and fell to the ice in an awkward manner, landing on his head. He seemed to be knocked out instantly, as he laid on the ice for a few moments without moving. Fortunately, help was able to get on the ice because the officials promptly blew the play dead.
In the immediate aftermath of the play, he was followed by four medical staff members as the Islanders and Sabres training staffs all emerged onto the ice. After the play, he was confused and in a bad mood. Although the stretcher was brought out for him, they ultimately chose not to use it.
Fortunately, he managed to leave the ice, albeit slowly, and with the assistance of his teammates and the trainers, who helped him carry his weight to the bench. Greenway, who must have been devastated by the outcome, received stick taps from players on both teams in the meantime.
Hopefully, this play won't have any long-term effects on Reilly. Although he most likely has a concussion, the worst-case scenario was undoubtedly avoided because he was able to stand and move. With any luck, he will recover quickly and be back in the Islanders lineup before long. We anticipate hearing from the Islanders regarding Reilly's condition.
