Predators GM Barry Trotz has pointed fingers at Gary Bettman, claiming that the NHL salary cap isn't uniform across teams because of varying income tax rules in different parts of North America.

Nashville, located in Tennessee, benefits from no state income tax. This effectively allow players to get a bigger paycheck since they pay fewer taxes. Other teams benefiting from similar tax advantages include the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, and Seattle Kraken.
Trotz discussed on TSN's Overdrive, acknowledging the competitive advantage his team gains and its impact on the salary cap.
"It is an advantage because your dollar goes a little bit farther,"
This summer, Nashville capitalized on its tax-free status by landing major signings such as Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei. Considered winners of free agency day, the Predators' advantage of no state income tax is a draw for players.
"When you talk to Stamkos or Marchessault or players that are serial winners, guys that have gone deep, have had good careers, and made a lot of money, it doesn't go that far," Trotz continued. "But it does help the middle group a little bit. For the elite players, the top players, they're just looking for a place that's serious about winning, wants to win, fits in their window."

Teams based in tax-free states have dominated recent Stanley Cup championships. The Panthers in 2024, the Golden Knights in 2023, and the Lightning in 2021 and 2020 exemplify this trend. In contrast, Canadian teams, burdened with the highest income taxes in North America if not the world, have not captured a Cup in over three decades!
