Montreal Canadiens make surprising decision to part ways with NCAA prospect
In a surprising turn of events, the Montreal Canadiens have decided to part ways with Rhett Pitlick, their former 5th round draft pick.
This development comes as a shock to many, considering Pitlick's recent progress and the potential he has displayed.
The @CanadiensMTL confirm to me that Rhett Pitlick is no longer a hope for the organization. #CH Drafted 131st overall in 2019, Pitlick was known for his skill, despite concerns about his smaller stature. The Canadiens' decision reflects their belief that he hasn't advanced enough to secure a spot on their NHL roster.
As Pitlick's college career at the University of Minnesota concludes, he is set to hit the free-agent market. The Canadiens had until August 1st to sign him if they wished to keep his rights, but they chose not to, thus allowing him to explore other opportunities.

Pitlick's exit from the Canadiens' system is unexpected, especially given his steady improvement over recent years. His final season at Minnesota was particularly strong, leading many to believe he was an overlooked talent within the team's prospect pool.
I don't think Rhett Pitlick gets enough love for how his game has progressed.
Went from a pure skill and speed player who used his on-puck carries to create offence, to a really translatable board battler and off-puck mover. Leads U. of Minnesota in pts with 35. #GoHabsGo
In his NCAA career, Pitlick showed significant growth. After a modest rookie season with 18 points and 5 goals, he improved to 11 goals and 25 points in his sophomore year. Last season, he set personal bests with 19 goals and 36 points.
The forgotten man in Montreal's prospect pool is Rhett Pitlick - perhaps because he was a fifth-round pick in 2019. He's found another level this season...picking up 12 points in his last six games. Here was his SH goal last night..dynamic skater! Article coming this afternoon:
Despite his progress, the Canadiens have opted to release him. While Pitlick's future in the NHL may now depend on his performance in free agency, he could potentially sign an AHL deal and continue to develop. The Canadiens might well rue the day they let him go if he thrives elsewhere.
