The Pittsburgh Penguins have arguably been one of the most successful expansion teams in the NHL but these teams have given them their greatest challenges.

Many of the teams biggest rivals are within their division and in driving distance of Pittsburgh. But not all of them are teams that they have struggled with through the years.
Montreal Canadians
The Penguins have lost 116 times to this original six franchise. With an all-time record of 75-116-23-11, Montreal has always shown to be a thorn in the side of the Pens. But not just in the regular season, the Canadians have outplayed the Pens in the post-season with a 6-11 lead in games played.
And who can forget this recent classic shootout thriller between the two clubs

New Jersey Devils
The Devils were a dominating team in the 90's and early 2000's which has allowed for their record against the Penguins to remain pretty close. At 115-117-17-11 all-time the Penguins have recently turned that page against the Devils. They hold a 4-1 series advantage against New Jersey since the 2001 Eastern Conference Finals.
Boston Bruins
Another original six franchise that holds 119 wins over the Penguins in 227 meetings. Their overall record against Pittsburgh is 79-119-21-8. The Penguins only have two playoff wins against the Bruins who they sparked a rivalry with from the start with similar color schemes. The two wins were in the 1991 and 1992 cup runs and since Boston has won the other series in 2013.

New York Rangers
The Penguins and Rangers have a long history, with the Pens and playing the Blue Shirts in the second most total contests. The Penguins do have a winning record against the Rangers in the playoffs with a 27-17 record overall and have won 5 out of 8 playoff series.
Philadelphia Flyers
Not a big surprise that the team the Penguins struggle with the most is also the cross state rival and most hated team for a Penguins fan (with a close second going to the Capitals).
The Penguins and Flyers have faced off 311 times, the most games of the Pens then any other franchise. With an early domination over Pittsburgh, the Flyers hold a overall record of 116-153-30-12 against the Pens.
In the playoffs the Pens, like the more recent regular seasons have slightly been the victor holding a 4-3 series record over Philly. Overall the win/loss against the Flyers in the post-season is nearly split with the Flyers holding a one game edge 21-20.
