A Swedish top-flight hockey team is making waves with a bold attempt to lure Montreal Canadiens' defenseman Mattias Norlinder back to Europe.
Mattias Norlinder, who has been training with MoDo of the SHL during the preseason, is currently a free agent after the Canadiens chose not to extend a qualifying offer.
Despite his status, MoDo is determined to bring the player back home and has initiated an ambitious crowdfunding campaign to bridge the gap in their budget. The team is aiming to raise around 1 million Swedish krona (approximately CDN$130,000) to make Norlinder an offer.

The crowdfunding effort has been met with early success, as reported by the team.
"So far more than 400'000 SEK, around 53'000 CAD has been collected" - Szymon Szemberg
Norlinder, a former 64th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, had a challenging season with the Laval Rocket, recording just 9 points in 50 games.
Although he could potentially earn more on a two-way NHL contract, where he would likely occupy a bottom-four role with the Rocket, MoDo's efforts indicate they are serious about providing him with an opportunity to play a more prominent role back in Sweden.
