Michael McNiven, a former goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens, has surprisingly announced his retirement from the NHL at just 27 years old.

Michael McNiven played in North American professional hockey from 2015 to 2022. He initially signed with the Canadiens in 2015 but was later traded to the Calgary Flames in 2022. McNiven's brief tenure with Calgary lasted only 19 days before he was moved to the Ottawa Senators for future considerations.
Despite his departure from the NHL, McNiven will continue his involvement in hockey as he joins the BCHL's Powell River Kings as an assistant coach.
We are thrilled to announce the hirings of Christopher Klack and Michael McNiven as assistant coaches!

"My goal is to create an environment where our players have the best possible chance to succeed both mentally and physically." says McNiven "Having played in all three levels of professional hockey in North America, I am well versed in the demands and challenges our team will face. I am committed to bringing my utmost effort and expertise to win a Fred Page Cup."

McNiven's NHL experience includes one period of play, which was less than ideal. He replaced Cayden Primeau and allowed three goals on seven shots, contributing to the Canadiens' heavy 8-2 loss.
This leaves McNiven with a career NHL GAA of 9.00 and a save percentage of .571.
