The TSN analyst Darren Dreger linked the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Montreal Canadiens as potential trade partners.

With both the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Montreal Canadiens struggling to find their rhythm this season, the two teams are expected to make massive changes to their lineup in the coming years.
While the Canadiens seem to be nearing the end of their rebuild, the Penguins, on the other hand, could be on the verge of starting the process.
Considering all this, the insider Darren Dreger believes the two teams could be in a great position to help each other achieve their goals.
On TSN 690, Dreger wrote that while nothing seems imminent, there's a reason to believe the Canadiens and the Penguins are poised to be trade partners once again.
He also revealed that the Penguins' scouting team and Kyle Dubas have been heavily scrutinizing the Canadiens recently.
In his own words:
"[Penguins GM] Kyle Dubas and company, the scouts of the Penguins have been heavily scouting the Montreal Canadiens.

Pittsburgh has some interesting pieces up front and if you're the Canadiens, you see certain needs and there have to be long-term benefits.

If you don't see the long-term benefits of a player and Pittsburgh has an interest in that player, maybe you take back an expiring contract.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have some expiring contracts that aren't going to hurt you for the rest of the year.

Maybe you get a sweetener where it makes some sense. I think there's a reason to link Montreal and Pittsburgh, even if there's nothing imminent.

But the fact that the Canadiens are healthy, maybe the time to move with Pittsburgh or someone else will come soon."
The Canadiens situation could change very quickly. With forwards Rafaël Harvey-Pinard and Patrik Laine set to get back in the lineup in the next few weeks, the Habs could be tempted to part ways with someone.
If they decide the time has come to make a move, the Habs are likely to generate interest from many teams, meaning that the Penguins will need to make an offer that Kent Hughes can't refuse if he wants to acquire one of the Canadiens' assets.
