Brian Wilde, an NHL analyst, has voiced strong opposition to the idea of Carey Price's jersey being retired by the Montreal Canadiens. Wilde contends that Price, despite his impressive career, does not meet the high bar set by other franchise legends. Wilde's main point is that Price has not won a Stanley Cup with the team, which he believes is a key criterion for such an honor.
"I think the standard of the Canadiens is Cups or many, many years of trophies, and he has only one of each and no Cups," Wilde said. "And that's simply, for me, not enough."
Despite this critique, Price's career with the Canadiens has been marked by significant achievements.
He holds the record for most goalie wins in franchise history with 361 and has accumulated impressive stats over his career. Price played 712 games with the Habs, maintaining a 2.51 GAA and a .917 save percentage. His impact on the ice is undeniable, even though he never captured a Stanley Cup with the team.
Following a standout 2021 playoff run, Price's career took a turn as he struggled with a knee injury, which led to his placement on LTIR and subsequent entry into the NHL's Player Assistance Program.
