He returned to training camp this year, impressing with an additional two inches in height, making him 6'10"-closer to breaking the record set by Zdeno Chara.
Chara, the towering Slovak defenseman, holds the current record as the NHL's tallest player at 6'9». With goalie skates on, Black would eclipse this record if he ever makes his NHL debut. However, despite his imposing size, his path to the NHL remains uncertain.
Can Black make the jump to the NHL?
Last season, Black played for Dartmouth in the NCAA, appearing in 30 games with a 13-8-8 record, a 2.58 goals-against average, and a .910 save percentage. While these numbers aren't particularly stellar considering Dartmouth's relatively weak division, the Panthers remain hopeful about his development.
He also made a brief appearance with the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL at the end of the season, but his debut was less than ideal. In his single AHL game, he allowed six goals and posted a .789 save percentage. However, one game is hardly a reliable measure of his potential.
The road ahead for Cooper Black
Despite his incredible height and potential, Black has a long road ahead before he earns a spot in the NHL. Panthers fans and management alike will be keeping a close eye on his progress in the AHL next season. If Black can prove himself at that level, the dream of becoming the tallest player in NHL history may still be within reach.
