During a recent edition of the Spittin' Chiclets Podcast, former NHL defenseman Ryan Whitney shared that he wants his former teammate Sidney Crosby off the Pittsburgh Penguins.
With three Stanley Cup wins, a dozen special awards, and 1596 points in 1272 career games, Sidney Crosby is undoubtedly one of the best to ever grace the ice. Yet, after putting up an impressive performance in his age 36 season with 42 goals and 52 assists in 82 games, it was not enough to shoot the Pittsburgh Penguins into the final wildcard spot for the 2024 NHL playoffs. Despite his continued high-caliber performance, a former teammate of his pleaded with him to leave the team after 19 years, but perhaps not for the reason you would think. On a recent edition of the Spittin' Chiclets Podcast, former NHL defenseman Ryan Whitney suggested that it would be best for Sidney Crosby to play on another NHL team to give him a chance at one more Cup before ending his career, cementing his spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
"I think Crosby is such an incredible storyline. I know you let it
off with the extension, it is true. Going into his 20th NHL season has played all 82 the past two years. 93 and 94 points I think 12th in the league in scoring last year. It's incredible to see what he's doing. Now, if December and January come along and it's like they're struggling, they're out of the playoffs, I've been told by numerous people that he will never sign anywhere else and he'll never go anywhere else. I would beg him please please go somewhere else. Let us watch you compete for a Stanley Cup. Let us see you in the playoffs sending yourself off in this Hall of Fame top Mount Rushmore-type career in the National Hockey League."
While it would be great to see another player become a four-time Stabley Cup winner, Ryan Whitney seems to believe that Sidney Crosby is likely loyal to a fault when it comes to building his legacy. Thus, he ultimately believes that he the NHL veteran possibly already made his last playoff appearance.
"It sounds like no matter what that will not be happening. You got to give credit to him as a loyal guy, and wanting to be with one team his entire career and looking to get that fourth Stanley Cup, it's just there's just not enough there. I don't have them in the
playoff.
Too many question marks, too slow of a team in the current NHL style of play, and how quick teams are and getting on pucks and forechecking. I don't see it in Pittsburgh, and I think they're going to be in the outside looking in again."
The Pittsburgh Penguins start the regular season on Wednesday, October 9th against last year's President's Trophy winners, the New York Rangers. Should Ryan Whitney be right about Sidney Crosby's loyalty, he will have to start the 2024-25 season with a bang if he is still hungry for another Stanley Cup.
