Markus Niemelainen won't be playing for the Edmonton Oilers this season, as he has opted to abandon ship and continue his career in Germany.

Niemelainen has left the Edmonton Oilers and signed with Eisbären Berlin, marking a significant shift in his hockey career. The 2016 draft pick never quite fulfilled the high expectations in the NHL.
Niemelainen, selected 63rd overall in the second round, had the potential to be a crucial part of Edmonton's defense, but after playing just 43 NHL games, with only 20 of those for the Oilers, his future now lies in Europe. His recent contract with Eisbären Berlin was announced by Jim Matheson on Twitter.
Despite his towering 6-foot-5 frame, Niemelainen struggled to solidify his place in the NHL. His stat line, which includes just one assist and eight penalty minutes in 43 games, didn't inspire confidence. Most of his professional career was spent with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors, where he failed to translate his physical style of play to the NHL level.
Niemelainen's departure may symbolize a broader issue within the Oilers' organization. While his NHL numbers were underwhelming, many observers had criticized the Oilers' drafting and development strategies at the time. However, the franchise has since shifted its focus, embracing analytics to improve player development at both the NHL and AHL levels.
At 25, Niemelainen still has time to rediscover his game in Germany. By joining Eisbären Berlin, he hopes to reignite his career in a different league, potentially opening doors for future opportunities.
This news highlights the ups and downs of an NHL career, especially for players drafted with high hopes that don't quite pan out as expected. Niemelainen will be hoping that his fresh start in Germany provides the spark he needs.
