Former first-round pick Austin Watson joins Detroit Red Wings on player tryout contract.

The Detroit Red Wings have made a strategic move by signing NHL veteran Austin Watson to a PTO contract ahead of the 2024-25 NHL season. With the season rapidly approaching, teams like the Red Wings are busy finalizing their rosters, and Watson's addition reflects their intent to strengthen their lineup.
Austin Watson, a former first-round pick from the 2010 NHL Draft, brings years of experience, though his career has seen its share of ups and downs. Drafted 18th overall by the Nashville Predators, Watson was expected to be a key player. He spent eight seasons with the Predators, becoming a consistent bottom-six presence known for his physicality.
However, Watson's career took a significant turn during the 2018 offseason when he was arrested on domestic allegations. The case led to a no-contest plea and a year-long probation. The NHL initially suspended him for 27 games, which was later reduced to 18 games. Despite this setback, Watson returned to the Predators for two more seasons before moving on to the Ottawa Senators.
In Ottawa, Watson continued to play a similar role, contributing around 10-15 points per season. His most recent stint with the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2023-24 season saw him play 33 games, where he managed to score 4 points.
Now at 32, Austin Watson is determined to extend his NHL career, with Detroit's General Manager Steve Yzerman taking a calculated risk by bringing him into the fold. Yzerman hopes Watson's experience and grit can contribute to the Red Wings' push for a Stanley Cup Playoff spot. As Detroit looks to bolster its roster, Watson's tryout contract offers him a chance to prove his worth and potentially secure a place on the team.
The move is a clear indication that the Red Wings are focused on adding the necessary pieces to compete at a higher level this season. Watson's journey in the NHL continues, and Detroit fans will be watching closely to see if he can make an impact and help the team achieve its playoff aspirations.
