Seth Jarvis inks a massive eight-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes
Eric Tulsky, General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, has announced a significant move for the franchise, securing forward Seth Jarvis.
The 22-year-old forward Seth Jarvis has signed a groundbreaking eight-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, valued at $63.2 million, including $29.24 million in signing bonuses. The deal solidifies Jarvis as a key player for the Hurricanes, reflecting his growing importance within the team.
The contract, which is one of the most innovative in NHL history, was first reported by insider Frank Seravalli on X:

«Seth is a cornerstone player for our franchise,» said Tulsky. «He took another huge step last season, playing in all situations and displaying the skill and competitive drive that will make him a star in this league in the years to come.»
Chris Johnston provided additional insights, explaining that the Hurricanes cleverly managed to reduce Jarvis' cap hit by deferring a portion of the payments. According to Johnston, Jarvis will earn an annual salary of $7.9 million, but the team's cap hit will be just $7.5 million. This unique structure will save the Hurricanes approximately $400,000 each season.
What makes this deal even more remarkable is the deferred bonus payment, which is set to be paid a day after the contract ends on July 1, 2032. By deferring this payment, the Hurricanes will avoid any cap charge in the ninth year of this eight-year contract.
This strategy is permitted under the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, but the Hurricanes are believed to be the first team to use it with the intent to minimize cap impact. The Hurricanes had previously tested a similar strategy with
Jaccob Slavin's contract, where his cap hit was slightly reduced.
The implications of such a contract structure could be significant for the NHL. Teams that adopt this method could free up cap space to acquire additional players, potentially making them more competitive. It wouldn't be surprising if more teams follow the Hurricanes' lead in using this strategy to maximize their salary cap efficiency.
Last season, Jarvis ranked second among Hurricanes skaters in both goals (33) and points (67), setting career highs in multiple categories, including goals, assists (34), power-play goals (13), and game-winning goals (9).
His performance on special teams was particularly noteworthy, as he led the team in power-play goals and tied for the team lead in shorthanded goals. Jarvis's contributions were critical to Carolina's success, and his ability to perform in clutch moments is reflected in his game-winning goals tally.
Internationally, Jarvis has represented Canada with distinction, participating in the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and securing a silver medal at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. His accomplishments on both the national and international stages further underscore his value to the Hurricanes.
With this long-term contract, the Carolina Hurricanes are clearly banking on Seth Jarvis to be a central figure in their pursuit of future success. The team's investment in Jarvis reflects their belief in his potential to become one of the league's brightest stars.
