A drunk driver struck the brothers from behind, causing their immediate death. This devastating news sent shockwaves through the hockey community, particularly among Calgary Flames fans, who once cheered for Gaudreau during his nine seasons with the team.
In a display of solidarity and respect, Calgary Flames fans gathered in front of the Saddledome, where Gaudreau once thrilled the crowd with his skill and passion for the game. The scene was a solemn one, with fans laying down flowers, jerseys, and other memorabilia to pay tribute to the player who had become a beloved figure in Calgary.
Although Flames fans were once disappointed in Johnny Gaudreau's departure to Columbus, at the end of the day he is a human being and that is more important than a sport, - said one fan.

Johnny Hockey will truly be missed by Flames fans and all of the people around the league. May he rest in peace, - said another fan as they placed a jersey at the growing memorial.
No matter who you cheer for, you never want to see someone get hurt, let alone lose their life, so this was truly an honorable act by the Flames fans to show their support to Johnny and the Gaudreau family.
The Calgary Flames released this statement:
It's with great sadness, we mourn the tragic deaths of our friend Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau.

Our hearts are broken by this devastating loss. Johnny was and always will be a member of the Flames family and loved by all of Calgary.

It was our privilege to call Johnny our teammate for nine amazing years in Calgary. He came to Calgary as a young man and grew up here, not only as a superstar on the ice, but also a beloved member of our community.

The pain we feel for Johnny's wife Meredith, children Noa and Johnny, parents Jane and Guy, sisters Kristen and Katie, and the entire Gaudreau family is immense.

Ownership, management, players, and staff of the Calgary Flames express our heartfelt sympathies during their time of sorrow.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Johnny Gaudreau was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. During his time with the team, he became a key player, scoring 243 goals and adding 500 assists over 763 NHL games.
His departure to the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022 was met with mixed emotions from Flames fans, but the outpouring of love and respect after his passing highlights the deep connection he had with the Calgary community.
The impact of Gaudreau's career extended beyond the ice. He was known not just for his on-ice abilities, but for his character and the joy he brought to fans. His loss is felt not just in Calgary, but across the entire NHL community.
As the hockey world mourns the loss of Johnny Gaudreau, the Calgary Flames community stands united in honoring a player who will forever be remembered for his contributions both on and off the ice.
