The New Jersey State Police reported that the fatal collision took place on a rural road in Oldsman Township, Salem County, approximately 30 miles south of Philadelphia. Johnny, 31, and his 29-year-old brother Matthew, both lost their lives in the crash.
Sean Higgins, 43, from Woodstown, New Jersey, was arrested at the scene. New Jersey State Police confirmed that he was driving under the influence and now faces two counts of vehicular homicide. The severity of the charges could result in Higgins spending more than 20 years behind bars.

The Gaudreau brothers were beloved figures, especially Johnny, a key player for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Their sudden passing has sent waves of sorrow through the NHL and beyond, leaving behind a grieving family.
During a virtual court appearance in Salem County on Friday, Higgins was reportedly ordered to remain in custody until his upcoming hearing on September 5.
As the proceedings unfolded, he asked Judge Michael J. Silvanio, «So I'm here until Thursday?» according to the New York Post. The judge indicated that the 72-hour hold had been prolonged due to the long weekend.
The penalty for first-degree vehicular homicide ranges from 10-20 years per charge, meaning Sean Higgins is expected to receive more than 20 years in prison for causing two deaths.
He could also face a $200,000 fine for each life lost. The Gaudreau brothers were to serve as groomsmen at their sister's Philadelphia wedding the following day, deepening the sorrow of this loss.
Johnny Gaudreau leaves behind his wife, Meredith, and their two young children, Noa and Johnny, both born in Columbus. Matthew, 29, is survived by his wife, Madeline.
