Eric Staal, a long-time NHL player, will sign a one-day contract to retire as a Carolina Hurricane, with the team also retiring his number #12.

Staal, who won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006, will end his 18-season NHL career with the team that drafted him.
Selected second overall in the 2003 NHL Draft, Eric Staal ranks second in franchise history for Goals (322), Assists (453), and Points (775). His remarkable career includes a Cup win with Carolina in 2006.
Staal's brothers, Jordan and Jared, have also played for Carolina, with Jared currently serving as the team's captain.
In addition to his 12 seasons with Carolina, Staal had stints with the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, and Florida Panthers.
A six-time NHL All-Star, Staal concludes his career with 455 goals, 608 assists, and 1063 points in 1365 games.
Internationally, Staal earned a gold medal with Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2007 World Championships, and also competed in the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.
