Heartbreaking News: Boston Bruins hockey Hall of Famer has passed away
The hockey world is grieving the loss of a legendary figure, with the NHL mourning the death of an iconic Hall of Famer.
Throughout its history, hockey has been shaped by many influential figures. On Tuesday, the sport lost one such individual: former Blackhawks and Bruins player and executive, Murray Costello.
Hockey Canada shared the news:
From Hockey Canada: "Deeply saddened to learn that long-time executive Murray Costello, who led the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and Hockey Canada as president for two decades, passed away Saturday at the age of 90, surrounded by his family». Was in the HHOF as a builder."
Though Costello's NHL playing career with Chicago, Boston, and Detroit was brief, his contributions off the ice earned him great respect and admiration. His passing has deeply affected the hockey community.
"The National Hockey League mourns the passing of Murray Costello, whose service to hockey, both in Canada and at the international level, over a seven-decade career fundamentally impacted the game," the NHL said in a statement. "Following a four-season playing career in the NHL, Costello earned induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005 as a builder for his transformational leadership of both the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and Hockey Canada, and his vision and passion drove both the establishment of the IIHF Women's World Championship and the addition of women's hockey to the Olympics.
"Additionally, Canada's success at the world junior level is a direct result of Costello's vision in the early 80's to establish a program of excellence that would produce 10 gold medals during his tenure as President of Hockey Canada from 1979 to 1998, including five straight from 1993 to 1997. We send our deepest condolences to Costello's family and many friends in the game all over the world."
Players are crucial to the NHL's success, but figures like Costello, who contributed behind the scenes, played a pivotal role in shaping the league. Murray Costello's impact on hockey will be remembered, and he leaves behind a legacy that has enriched the sport. Rest in peace, Murray Costello.
