This season hasn't gone the way that anyone in Buffalo could have hoped thus far, as the Sabres have failed to take the expected step forward with their talented young core group of players.
In recent times they've been linked to Vancouver Canucks star Elias Pettersson as they look to significantly upgrade their roster, and according to a new report, that's not the only big name they've been looking to chase.
Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News has now reported that the Buffalo Sabres have missed out on acquiring some huge names over the past 12 months, naming Martin Necas, Nikolaj Ehlers, Andrew Mangiapane and Yegor Sharangovich as players the team looked to acquire unsuccessfully.
While they've got some fantastic play this season from the likes of Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, the team just don't have the depth or the star power to compete in the Eastern Conference, and the fact that they missed out on all of these players shows just how hard it will be to turn things around.
Necas was a Restricted Free Agent that the team attempted to acquire, but the others all would have come via trade, and with the team likely not being willing to include some of their young core to acquire these names, it's easy to see why they've fallen short.
Even with their young core, things in Buffalo aren't good with Harrington defining the organization like this:
Ultimately, they will have to turn things around one day, but that won't be in 2024/25, and perhaps it won't be until they land the big star they are looking for, with the team reportedly going 0/4 over the past 12 months in big name deals.
