Brad Marchand issues a clear warning to the young talent on the Boston Bruins
This season, the Boston Bruins will include a number of young players on their roster, and captain Brad Marchand has sent them a clear message.
The Boston Bruins have added Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov to their roster following another successful season a year ago, but they still need to fill a few spots, most notably the right wing position following Jake DeBrusk's departure.
Brad Marchand discussed potential candidates for that position in his first interview since taking the captaincy of the Boston Bruins back in 2024-2025. He gave young Morgan Geekie high marks for his potential to play a larger role.
"I love playing with Geeks," Marchand said. "He's so great in some of the different areas, the way he can hold onto pucks and makes plays. Shoots it. Great in the corners. I think he really complements our line as well. We haven't had a ton of reps together, so we'll continue to work on it. But I've always really liked his game."
Nevertheless, Marchand has sent a clear message to players like Matthew Poitras and Fabian Lysell, among others, stating that spots on the team simply won't be given out despite having spots available.
"It's encouraging," Marchand said when informed youngsters like Lysell, Matt Poitras and Georgii Merkulov played pretty well against the Capitals. "But pretty well needs to be better. For those guys to make the team, you've got to look at it and push guys out that are on term and big deals. Pretty good is not going to cut it. If you're happy with that, you've got a long ways to go."
While it may sound harsh, there's a good reason he's regarded as one of the NHL's best captains, and the Bruins will need those players to step up into big roles and perform well right away if they hope to win the Stanley Cup again in 2024-2025.
