GM of the Boston Bruins Don Sweeney on Wednesday confirmed what many had predicted. According to Sweeney, he declared that until Jeremy Swayman signs a contract, he will not be attending training camp as a restricted free agent goalie.
While expressing his disappointment that Swayman will not be practicing with his teammates, Sweeney also expressed optimism that the 25-year-old native of Anchorage, Alaska will be signed before the December 1 RFA deadline.
Swayman, a USHL netminder selected 111th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, was expected to be the team's starting goalie after Linus Ullmark was traded to the Ottawa Senators during the offseason.
The goaltending load has been fairly evenly shared by Swayman and Ullmark over the last three seasons. Swayman played in 44 games the previous season, finishing 25-10-8 with a.917 save percentage and a 2.53 goals-against average.
In 2024, he was named an All-Star. He and Ullmark also won the 2023 William M. Jennings Trophy, which is awarded to the best goalie tandem in the league for allowing the fewest goals allowed in a season.
As training camp gets underway, the team's goaltending options include Michael DiPietro, Brandon Bussi, and Joonas Korpisalo, who was acquired from the Senators in the Ullmark trade.
