Veteran Alex Edler signs contract with the Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks announced that Alex Edler will formally retire from the NHL as a member of the team by signing a one-day contract with the team.
After 17 seasons, Alexander Edler is retiring from the NHL. The 38-year-old defenseman will be honored prior to the Canucks' game against the Philadelphia Flyers on October 11 after he signs a one-day contract with the team.
In the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Edler was selected by Vancouver in the third round, 91st overall. He would go on to play 15 seasons there, spanning from 2006-07 to 2020-21.

«I am humbled and honoured to officially end my career and retire as a member of the Vancouver Canucks,» said Edler. «I consider myself lucky to have started my career with such an outstanding organization, in this amazing city, with the best fans in the NHL. Finishing my NHL career where it all began is something very special for myself and my family.»
With 925 career games played, he ranks first among defensemen and fourth in the history of the Canucks. In addition, he made numerous appearances for Sweden abroad, taking home gold at the IIHF World Championships in 2013 and 2017 as well as silver in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
The native of Ostersund, Sweden amassed 409 points (99-310-409) and 665 penalty minutes during his tenure with the Canucks, averaging 22:54 minutes on the ice per game. His 409 points rank first among defensemen and 12th overall in team history. He leads all Canucks defensemen with 99 goals, 310 assists, and 177 power play points.
In his 82 postseason games with Vancouver, Edler also scored 38 points (8-30-38), racked up 60 penalty minutes, and had a plus/minus rating of +8. A key player in the Canucks' run to the 2011 Stanley Cup Final, he averaged 24:47 minutes on ice while scoring 11 points (2-9-11) in 25 games.
Edler spent his final two NHL seasons (2021-2023) with the Los Angeles Kings. Throughout the 2022-23 season, he finished with 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in 64 games.
