Today, Elliotte Friedman disclosed on his Podcast 32 Thoughts that the Anaheim Ducks are thinking about dealing legendary player Cam Fowler.
Players across the league have already started informally skating with teammates ahead of the start of NHL training camps later this month. Elliotte Friedman reports that the Anaheim Ducks are starting to discuss giving Cam Fowler a new home.
The team no longer needs Fowler's role as new, young players like Pavel Mintyukov are assuming the first-pairing duties on the left side. There are four unknown options for where Fowler could go with a 28-team no trade list; he is, nonetheless, amenable to a move.
"I don't think anybody will be surprised if some time this season Cam Fowler is elsewhere and from what I've been told it is a positive working environment with him and the Ducks about getting this done and finding him a new place to play."
It is difficult to move Cam Fowler because of his $6.5 million cap hit, which is locked in for the 2025-2026 season. But with a shorter remaining term and the Ducks' cap flexibility, retention might very well play a part in fetching a hefty package.
"What I've heard is that Fowler has indicated a willingness to talk to more teams than that and consider more teams than that," Freidman added. "Fowler has a lot of respect around the league. There will be interest. I don't think anybody will be surprised if some time this season Cam Fowler is elsewhere."
With 974 games played for the Ducks in his career, Fowler is third on the all-time list, just behind Corey Perry (988) and Ryan Getzlaf (1157). He leads the Ducks all-time in points (453), assists (357), and goals (96) among defensemen.
After being selected by Anaheim with the 12th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, he joined the Ducks for the 2010-11 season and went on to play for the team for the next 14 seasons.
We'll see what Cam Fowler does next. Whatever happens, his number will most likely be in the Honda Center rafters in a few years.
