A tragic incident unfolded outside Ford Field after a Detroit Lions football game, leaving two men dead and a third man arrested.
Detroit Police Chief James White confirmed that the second victim, a man in his 20s, succumbed to injuries sustained during a shooting that followed an altercation after the game. The first victim, a man in his 40s, was killed instantly by gunfire.
"It's a beautiful day and shouldn't have led to this, but it did and we're going to do what we do well and do the investigation and get it closed out and unfortunately, you got a family now who's going to have to deal with the loss of a loved one," White said.
The shooting occurred while officers were managing post-game traffic near the stadium. Thanks to a prompt response, the suspect, a man in his 30s, was quickly taken into custody. Two weapons were also recovered from the scene.
"They were able to get him into custody quickly and recover two weapons from the scene and we're kind of piecing all of that together right now, but we do know we have the shooter," White said. "No one else is at risk. No one in the community. No one in this area is at risk."
Investigation ongoing, no additional threats
Chief White emphasized that the community is safe and there are no ongoing threats stemming from the incident. Authorities are continuing the investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the shooting, but with the suspect in custody, attention now turns to understanding the motives behind the attack.
Police have urged anyone with further information to contact local law enforcement as they work to close the case and bring justice to the victims' families.
