Hockey player's assault leaves official severely injured
A ball hockey player has been charged after allegedly assaulting a referee in Quebec City, causing a fractured skull and other serious injuries that necessitate surgery.
Officiating in sports is already a challenging role, but it reached a new level recently when a hockey player aggressively attacked an official.
Hockey is can inherently be a violent sport, but ball hockey typically isn't as intense. However, a recent incident in Quebec has shocked many with its severity. Although there is no video of the event, reports indicate that after being ejected, a player assaulted an official with his stick, hitting him in the chest and head and causing injuries to his jaw and head.
«(The referee) received a stick blow to the chest followed by a stick blow with both hands directly to the face,»
The NBHPA stated in a social media post outlining the incident:
UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR TOWARDS THE REFREES | QUESTION AGAIN!!!
As we did a lot of awareness this winter for Dek hockey violence, we heard a story that broke our hearts last night.😞
There was some drama yesterday. A referee who sent off a player of the match was attacked by the foul player. He was punched in the chest followed by a stick (with two hands) straight to the face!
The referee is seriously injured. Here we're talking about:
-Fractured skull
-A fractured jaw
-All teeth broken and/or displaced
-Concussion
-Stopping of work and long surgeries ahead for facial reconstruction
IS A PART OF DECK REALLY WORTH IT?😱WHAT CAN WE COLLECTIVELY DO TO HELP PREVENT THIS?
P. s the foul player will be suspended for life in the NBHPA despite this not happening at an affiliate center
PPS All our thoughts are with this ref in our community who will be going through a very difficult time in the next few days♥️
THAT DOESN'T MAKE NO SENSE!
Global News has released images highlighting the severe injuries sustained by the official, which are truly horrifying. It's especially distressing considering the official was a volunteer dedicated to ensuring the game ran smoothly and maintained high standards.
The image is quite disturbing, and in light of recent violent incidents against officials across various sports, it's clear this troubling trend must be addressed.
The NBHPA reported that the victim will require facial reconstruction surgery and is currently unable to work.
Quebec City police confirmed that an investigation is in progress and that a 31-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in connection with the incident.
«The man was questioned and released on a promise to appear in court on charges of assault with a weapon and causing bodily harm,» police said in a statement.
«All our thoughts go to this referee in our community who will experience very difficult times in the coming days,» the association said.
