With potentially only one more shot at the Olympics, Alex Ovechkin could be thwarted by Russia's existing ban.

Russia has been barred from participating in the Olympics and international hockey tournaments for years, a restriction that has deprived fans of watching some thrilling matchups. With the 2026 Winter Olympics approaching in just 18 months, the IIHF is expected to make a decision regarding Russia and Belarus next May, which will determine the future of Russian hockey and its potential return to the Olympics.
Veteran Russian star Alex Ovechkin has spoken out about the ban, expressing his desire to compete for Olympic gold but acknowledging that the uncertainty affects everyone involved.

"In theory, yes, but you see what is happening with our team now. They are not allowing us to participate in the World Championships or the Olympics, so I don't know how this will all happen."

With the ongoing conflict, it remains unclear when Russian teams will be permitted to return to international competition. Given that Ovechkin is now 38 years old, this may be his final chance to win a coveted gold medal.
While there is still time for changes, the current outlook appears bleak, with indications that the ban may persist, potentially sidelining Ovechkin and other Russian NHL stars from the major event once again.
