Vegas Golden Knights and the wider Las Vegas hockey community are in mourning after the passing of Kirk Brooks, a prominent figure who left an indelible mark on youth hockey and the local sports scene.

Brooks, who owned the Tri-City Storm from 2009 to 2019, was more than just an owner; he was a visionary who dedicated a decade to nurturing the growth of hockey in the valley.
A native of Vegas, Brooks acquired the team and the Las Vegas Ice arena-renamed Viaero Arena-in 2009 from Joel Weins for $4.3 million. Under his ownership, the Storm clinched the Clark Cup in the 2015-16 season and captured the Anderson Cup in the 2018-19 season, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record.
After the 2018-19 season, Brooks sold the team to a group of Chicago businessmen, headed by Dave Vennetti.
Brooks was a central figure in the Las Vegas hockey scene and had ties to the Storm beyond ownership. He also owned the Las Vegas Ice Center, the venue where the Storm often held their training camps.
Under his leadership and guidance, hockey became accessible to numerous children and families, fostering a robust community spirit anchored in sportsmanship and teamwork.
The legacy Brooks leaves behind is one of passion and dedication. He was not just developing a team or a league but was genuinely invested in enhancing the lives of the players and staff who came under his wing. His commitment to the sport's welfare and his broader contributions to the community have carved a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations.
Brooks's influence stretched far beyond the administrative boundaries of his roles. By focusing on grassroots development, he ensured that hockey was more than just a game in Las Vegas; it became a catalyst for community engagement and youth development. His work has laid a strong foundation for the future, ensuring that his impact will be felt for years to come.
The Golden Knights, echoing the sentiments of countless who knew him, extend their deepest condolences to his family and friends. As the city reflects on his vast contributions, it is clear that Kirk Brooks's vision and dedication have left an indelible mark on the valley. May he be remembered not only for his achievements but for the spirit of generosity and foresight with which he led.
