Vincent Desharnais' transition from the Edmonton Oilers to the Vancouver Canucks has sparked a flurry of reactions. The defenseman looks back on his emotional journey and braces for his return to face his former team.

Vincent Desharnais' big move and emotional return

Vincent Desharnais' recent decision to join the Vancouver Canucks has certainly made waves among Edmonton Oilers fans. The towering defenseman, who was a fan favorite in Edmonton, expressed mixed emotions about his new chapter. In an interview on the Jason Gregor show, Desharnais shared how his transition has been bittersweet.
It was a tough decision for me but seeing how happy everyone was, for me, it was really nice... It made me feel a little bit better about it

- Vincent Desharnais

Desharnais, drafted by the Oilers in the 7th round of the 2016 NHL Draft, made his debut with the team in the 2022-23 season. Despite a challenging start, he became a mainstay in their lineup, participating in 78 games last season. His solid performance and towering presence on the ice made him a valuable asset for Edmonton.

Desharnais' reflections on leaving Edmonton

The defenseman revealed his feelings about leaving Edmonton and his anticipation of facing his former teammates.
It's going to be weird playing against the boys next season... seeing all the boys it was so cool to see how happy they were for me, how excited they were, but it was also very sad, it was kind of the last times that we would spend together and not hit each other and try to slash each other.
Desharnais' departure was a significant moment for the Oilers. He was known for his physicality and presence on the ice, factors that the Canucks found appealing. Vancouver signed him to a two-year deal worth $4 million this summer, a move that reflects their belief in his potential to strengthen their defensive lineup.
Last season with Edmonton, Desharnais scored one goal and added ten assists, with one assist in his 16 playoff appearances. His performance, though not prolific in terms of scoring, demonstrated his reliability and defensive capabilities.
The Oilers considered matching Vancouver's offer but ultimately decided to let Desharnais go, focusing on their own key player signings. As he prepares for the upcoming season, the excitement and challenge of playing against his former team will add an interesting dynamic to his new role with the Canucks.
