The Toronto Maple Leafs made roster moves on Wednesday afternoon, placing two players on waivers.
Forward Alex Nylander, younger brother of Leafs star William Nylander, and American defenseman Dakota Mermis were both waived, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Dakota Mermis hasn't played an NHL game with Toronto this season, and the 30-year-old defender has three AHL games under his belt this year with the Toronto Marlies, in which he collected a single assist.
Mermis has NHL experience, playing 27 total NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes, New Jersey Devils, and Minnesota Wild.
Alex Nylander, a 26-year-old forward, appeared in five games with the Leafs this season but did not register a point. He has been more prolific in the AHL, where he has eight goals and four assists in 14 games for the Marlies.
While he's shown an ability to be a productive player at the AHL level, he has not been able to establish a consistent NHL role since Buffalo selected him eighth overall in the 2016 NHL Draft.
Elsewhere in the league, the San Jose Sharks also placed defenseman Valtteri Pulli on waivers. The 23-year-old Finnish blueliner signed with the Sharks a couple of years ago as an undrafted free agent following a strong season in Finland's Liiga.
Valtteri Pulli has split time between San Jose and their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda. With his size and physicality, Pulli hasn't cemented his status in the NHL just yet but can still be considered a projectable prospect for the Sharks' future, unless another team claims him.
